On the 28th ultimo, by the courtesy of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, and using their code, I despatched the following telegram to your Office:-

"What progress is being made Kowloon-Canton Extension Railway negotiations ? Hongkong anxiously awaiting conclusive news," which I now beg to confirm.

On the following day, through the same agency, the subjoined reply from you reached me:-

"Advise the following to China Association. Negotiations are in progress with Colonial Office and British and Chinese Corporation, Ltd., in agreement; expect early settlement."

This prompt response afforded much satisfaction to the Committee, who desire to tender their thanks therefor, and to express the earnest hope that the expectation will be fulfilled.

The railway question is still exciting much interest, not only here, but in China, where the transfer of the American interest in the Hankow-Canton line to the Belgians has aroused much indignation in Chinese circles, and some prominent natives are urging the cancellation of the concession.

I notice a statement in to-day's issue of the "Hongkong Daily Press" to the effect that the agreement between Portugal and China for the construction of the proposed Macao and Canton Railway has...
